The Truth Only a Few Can See (Or So They Think)

Inside every person there is a small, almost invisible seed: the need to feel significant. On most days it stays buried, unnoticed, under the ordinary weight of everyday life. But it doesn't take much for it to sprout. And when it sprouts, it doesn't just produce an idea. It produces an identity — someone who knows what everyone else doesn't.
This is the story of that seed: what makes it sprout, who waters it, and why today it grows faster than in any other era. And it has a consequence worth stating up front, because it solves an apparent mystery: the die-hard partisan and the person who believes national ID cards hide secret tracking chips are not two different kinds of people. They are the same person, with the same seed inside them, that simply sprouted in different soil. The conspiracy theory is just the most extreme, most visible form of fanaticism — which makes it the clearest example for understanding how the mechanism works in all its forms.
Let's start, then, with the seed itself, because without it nothing that follows makes sense.
Psychologist Andrew Lantian and his colleagues studied something called the need for uniqueness — the need to feel special, different from the average person. They measured it as a stable personality trait and found something striking: the stronger this need is in someone, the more likely they are to believe in conspiracy theories — even entirely made-up ones, presented to them for the first time inside the experiment itself. The appeal of a theory, in other words, doesn't depend so much on its content. It depends on how well it satisfies the need to feel different from the crowd.
There's something even more revealing in the same research. When participants were told that a given view was held by the majority — say, eighty-one percent of people — their belief in it dropped immediately. No evidence had changed; only the perception of how rare that knowledge was. The moment it became popular, it became less appealing.
This means a belief can work like a membership card to a small, exclusive circle — the "awake," as they like to call themselves. And it offers three rewards at once: intellectual superiority ("I figured it out, everyone else is still asleep"), belonging to a community that validates you daily, and moral superiority — you're not just smarter, you're someone who cares enough to search for the truth, unlike the "comfortable" who'd rather not know.
That's why, when you bring someone evidence that disproves their belief, they don't experience it as "I learned something new." They experience it as a threat to their own identity. You're not fighting a lack of information. You're fighting a seed that has already sprouted.
But the seed doesn't sprout on its own. It needs rain. And that rain has a name: loss of control.
In two thousand eight, psychologists Jennifer Whitson and Adam Galinsky published a landmark experiment in the journal Science. They put people in situations where they felt a lack of control — giving them, for instance, random feedback that had nothing to do with their actual choices — and then showed them images of pure random noise: static "snow" on a screen, random sequences of stock-market numbers. The finding: people who had experienced a lack of control saw patterns, shapes, "trends" in that pure chaos — things that simply weren't there — far more often than everyone else. They called it illusory pattern perception.
The mind cannot tolerate chaos. When your sense of personal control collapses — you lose your job, you don't understand what's happening with the economy, a pandemic turns your life upside down within a matter of weeks — the mind looks elsewhere for order to replace what it lost. Psychology calls this compensatory control. And this is exactly where the rain meets the seed: a simple need for order would be enough to make you believe in something structured — a god, a law of nature. But when that same loss of control finds a seed that's already asking to feel significant, the result isn't just a belief in order. It's a belief in an order that you, and only a few others, were the first to see.
That's why belief in conspiracies rises so consistently during periods of crisis — economic collapse, terrorist attacks, pandemics — without the theory needing any logical connection to the crisis itself. A general sense of threat is enough to water the seed.
You don't have to look far to see this in action. A country like Greece went through almost fifteen unbroken years without a break: an economic crisis, bailout memoranda, collapsing incomes, youth unemployment that at one point passed fifty percent of an entire generation. Just as things began to settle, a pandemic arrived with contradictory guidance and two years of lockdowns. Then an energy crisis, inflation, a train disaster that left behind questions without clear answers for a long time. Almost fifteen straight years of rain, falling on a seed that was already there — not because people there are more gullible, but because the accumulated weight of uncertainty was objectively enormous. And the pattern has no ideology; it sprouts just as readily in someone who believes a government engineered a pandemic on purpose as in someone who believes only their own side sees clearly in a world full of "manipulated" people.
The seed always existed. The rain, through crisis after crisis, has come many times throughout history too. What never existed before, though, is a mechanism built specifically to find every sprouting seed, in billions of people at once, and push it to grow faster than it ever would on its own. That mechanism is called the algorithm, and it works like a vast greenhouse.
The platforms where we spend our hours aren't designed to inform us accurately; they're designed to keep us there as long as possible, because that's how they make money. And what holds attention longest isn't sober analysis — it's content that makes you feel threatened, or makes you feel chosen. Often both at once. In two thousand eighteen, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studied millions of posts on Twitter and found that false and extreme news traveled about six times faster than true stories. Not because they were more convincing. Because they were more shocking — and on top of that, they gave whoever shared them the feeling of revealing something.
Our bodies cooperate in this, without meaning to. Faced with something threatening, the amygdala activates — the part of the brain that evolved over millions of years to keep us alive in the face of danger; attention locks on automatically, because once upon a time ignoring a threat cost far more than ignoring something neutral. Moral outrage — anger at someone we consider unjust — goes a step further: it also activates the brain's reward circuits. We get angry together, we share it, we receive validation, and the algorithm learns what we like. It gives us more of it. That closes a loop no one designed on purpose, but that no one has any incentive to break.
This same greenhouse, which finds the seed inside every person under pressure and pushes it to grow, produces two effects that seem opposite but are, in fact, the same thing.
The first: it makes us think the whole field is overgrown. On every social network, a small share of users produces most of the political content — studies place it around six percent of the most active users, responsible for more than two-thirds of political posts — and that share is consistently more extreme than the average person. The algorithm chooses to show us exactly them, because they provoke the strongest reaction, and our minds, which generalize from whatever is emotionally intense, encode it as "that's how everyone out there is." A study by the organization More in Common, in two thousand nineteen, showed the paradoxical result: the more someone consumes news and social media, the worse — not better — they guess the actual positions of the other side. Most of the field, in other words, isn't as overgrown as we think. We're simply seeing, over and over, the same few sprouts the greenhouse chose to show us.
The second effect is the exact opposite, and it comes from the same greenhouse: some of those sprouts are real, and they really do grow. Someone starts out simply dissatisfied; the algorithm feeds them ever more extreme content, because that's what holds attention; and months later they find themselves believing things they would have rejected at the start. This path has produced, documented, real violent or criminal organizations in recent history — from armed groups of the nineteen-seventies to parties that entered parliaments with real vote shares and were later convicted in court as criminal organizations. This core is small, but real, and it has disproportionate influence, precisely because the same greenhouse that grows it is also what makes it look bigger than it is.
Two truths, then, not one, both flowing from the same mechanism: most people aren't as extreme as we think — and at the same time, real extremism exists, grown inside the very greenhouse that makes us see fields everywhere when there's really just a patch of weeds.
The soil, of course, changes depending on who's doing the growing — which is why fanaticism wears so many different masks. Sometimes it's admiration for a strongman leading another country, because it gives the sense that order exists somewhere, even if it's someone else's order. Sometimes it's extreme nationalism, which turns the need to belong into a need for an enemy. Sometimes it's an old, dark prejudice — like antisemitism — coming back to life precisely because it offers a ready-made villain in an age without clear explanations. The soil differs; the plant is always the same species, and it always has the same shape: a small group that knows, against a world that — supposedly — doesn't.
If the seed, the rain, and the greenhouse are, as we've seen, three stages of the same process, then resistance to them should sit on the same chain too — and it does.
People who pause for a moment before believing something, asking themselves "how sure am I, really," believe systematically less in false news, regardless of political affiliation — they don't uproot the seed, they simply don't water it easily. People with tolerance for uncertainty — the ability to live comfortably with "we don't know yet" instead of needing absolute certainty — need more rain before they feel the need to believe something. People who have a sense of stability somewhere else in their lives — work, family, routine — already have deep roots exactly where the loss of control would otherwise strike. And people with friendships outside their own ideological bubble cut off the greenhouse's light without even trying: it's hard to believe "the other side is all monsters or fools" when you personally know someone normal over there.
And none of this is only about the distant "other," the conspiracy theorist somewhere out there. You don't have to believe in secret chips inside ID cards to feel this same seed inside yourself. A single moment of absolute certainty about something complicated is enough, a moment of contempt for anyone who thinks differently. Fanaticism doesn't always need extreme content; it only needs certainty, and certainty, however much we don't like to admit it, feels like warm soil.
Perhaps the hardest part of this whole story isn't understanding why someone else believes what they believe, but recognizing where, inside your own thinking, something has already sprouted — where the need to be right has become more important than the need to understand.
The next time a belief overwhelms you with such force that you can't even bear to question it, pause beside it for a moment, as if standing in front of something that just sprouted in your own garden. Ask: does what I'm feeling right now give me answers — or does it just give me roots? And if that belief were to wither one day in front of a good argument, what would you actually lose? An idea — or your place among the few who, as you believed, were tending something no one else had even noticed?
