Ten million people, the largest people in Europe with no state of their own. And yet the first documented record of them anywhere on the continent wasn't written in some great capital — it was written in Nauplion, in thirteen seventy-eight.
This audiobook follows the Roma's journey from northwestern India, traced through their own language — a living record of their route through Persia, Armenia, and Byzantium — to their long presence on Greek soil, their place within the Ottoman administrative system, and the centuries of persecution that culminated in five centuries of slavery in Romania and the Porajmos, the Nazi genocide.
And we arrive at today: why integration remains so difficult, what the data actually says about poverty, education, and life expectancy, and what a community left behind that no statistic records — from flamenco to the music of the Ottoman court — in a story that Greece knew first of all.
