Gold: A History of Obsession

On January twenty-fourth, eighteen forty-eight, a carpenter named James Marshall bends over a stream in California and sees something glinting in the water. He works for a man named John Sutter, building a sawmill on land Sutter has spent years building up fields, pastures, a small fort that functions like an entire settlement. What Marshall just found will make three hundred thousand people abandon everything and rush toward this exact patch of land. Within months, the fortune-seekers trample Sutter's fields, slaughter his livestock, tear his fort apart plank by plank for the wood, and claim his own land out from under him in court. The man on whose ground this whole fever was born dies years later, poor and forgotten, while more than two billion dollars in gold has already come out of the ground around him.

How does a metal destroy the very man who found it first? Sutter's story isn't an isolated case it's simply the most recent repetition of a pattern that recurs, with striking consistency, on every continent and in every era humans have encountered this one particular metal. To understand why, we first need to ask something more basic: what does gold have that nothing else does?

The answer starts with chemistry, not myth. Gold is one of the few elements in nature that doesn't rust, doesn't tarnish, barely reacts with anything at all a piece of gold pulled from a tomb five thousand years ago shines today exactly as it shone then, while a piece of iron from the same era would have long since dissolved into rust. It's also astonishingly malleable; a single gram can be hammered into a sheet thin enough to cover an entire room, without breaking. And it's rare in a way the human brain struggles to grasp: all the gold ever pulled from the earth, across the whole of human history every ring, every coin, every bar in every vault on the planet would fit inside a cube just twenty-two meters on a side. The size of a seven-story building, nothing more. Brilliant, incorruptible, rare: three properties that, together, explain why no civilization on the planet ever needed to be taught by another to worship it they all discovered it independently, and all arrived at the same conclusion.

That shared conclusion, in ancient Egypt, took a specific shape: before gold was ever money, it was something far heavier sacred. There they called it "the flesh of the gods" they believed the sun god Ra's own skin was made of exactly this metal. The pharaoh, as the god's descendant, lived literally surrounded by it: furniture, vessels, funeral masks, symbols of office. The very name Nubia, the region south of Egypt where most of it was found, comes from the ancient Egyptian word for gold an entire land named after the metal it held.

So gold began as something sacred, not as money. That transition happened in one specific place: Lydia, in Asia Minor, around five hundred fifty BC. There, in the river Pactolus, the locals found a natural alloy of gold and silver. King Croesus was the first to manage separating the two metals and strike pure gold coins of fixed value, recognizable everywhere. The phrase "rich as Croesus" isn't an accident it comes literally from this man. For the first time, gold wasn't just sacred. It was measurable.

And yet, Croesus himself would become the first proof that this wealth protects no one if anything, it can blind you. Before declaring war on the Persians, he consults the Oracle at Delphi, who tells him that if he crosses the river, he will destroy a great empire. Croesus hears exactly what he wants to hear, and attacks certain of victory. The empire that fell was his own. Cyrus of Persia defeats him, captures Sardis, and the richest man of his age loses everything precisely because he trusted the same wealth that had made him so certain of himself.

Almost two thousand years later, on the other side of the world, a man proves the opposite problem: not how easily wealth gets destroyed, but how fragile its value actually is. Mansa Musa, king of Mali, sets out in thirteen twenty-four on a pilgrimage to Mecca, accompanied by tens of thousands of people and unimaginable quantities of gold. In every city he passes through Cairo, Medina he hands out gold freely, as a gift. The result isn't gratitude; it's collapse. The value of gold in Cairo falls so sharply that the city needs nearly a decade to recover. The probably-richest man who ever lived managed, through generosity alone, to prove that even gold has no absolute value only a relative one, only for as long as it stays rare.

If abundance can destroy gold's value, scarcity can destroy the judgment of those hunting for it. Two centuries after Mansa Musa, in what's now Colombia, Spanish conquistadors hear about a real Muisca ceremony: the new chieftain would be covered in gold dust, carried out on a raft, and would dive into a sacred lake offering golden objects to the gods. The Spanish hear the story, misunderstand it, and inflate it: the "gilded man" becomes an entire "golden city" El Dorado. Expeditions armed with weapons and hope vanish into the jungle searching for a city that never existed in that form. The real ceremony was true. The myth born from it was enough to cost lives for centuries.

El Dorado was the story of a handful of explorers who went mad chasing a place. Three centuries later, at James Marshall's stream, we see the same thirst, but now on an industrial scale, organized around a real discovery instead of a myth. The exact same scene would repeat itself half a century later in Canada's Klondike, with thousands of people crossing frozen mountains carrying everything they owned on their backs. The mechanism is always the same: a piece of news, a rumor, and suddenly thousands of lives change direction at once a few get rich, most are ruined, and whoever was already standing there, like Sutter, pays the price for everyone else.

Governments, watching this force repeatedly slip beyond their control, eventually tried to tame it officially. In nineteen forty-four, at Bretton Woods in the United States, the war's victorious powers tied the global monetary system to the dollar, and the dollar to a fixed quantity of gold. For the first time, this thousand-year-old thirst for the metal became an official, international institution. It didn't last: in nineteen seventy-one, with American reserves running dry, President Nixon unilaterally severed the link. The dollar was left resting on nothing but a promise. Gold, though, didn't go anywhere it simply returned to the role it held before any official system: a refuge, not a tool.

And that's exactly what we're watching happen again today. Central banks around the world are buying gold at rates never seen before China, without pause, for twenty-one straight months; Poland, fearing its neighborhood with Russia; dozens of other countries, each with its own fear. The price hit a historic record within twenty twenty-six, close to five thousand five hundred eighty-nine dollars an ounce, before collapsing below four thousand within a few months the same steep rise and fall we saw in California, in Cairo, in the Colombian jungle, now measured in billions instead of sacks of dust.

And however much the shape of this thirst has changed across the centuries, one thing never has: gold's scarcity isn't merely an economic arrangement, something that could someday collapse. Gold is a chemical element, with its own nucleus you can't "make" it the way you make a synthetic diamond, by simply rearranging carbon atoms. You'd have to change the actual nucleus of another element, inside a particle accelerator, at a cost of billions, just to recover a few invisible micrograms, often radioactive, decaying before you could even hold them. The scarcity that made Croesus a king and turned Sutter into a beggar, then, isn't a human arrangement. It's written into the laws of nature.

That physical constant is the one thing that never changed, across the thousands of years separating Croesus from China's central bank today. The form changed completely coins, rafts, streams, digital reserves. The instinct itself, though, hasn't changed at all: every time humans feel insecure, they turn to this exact same metal, as if remembering something very old.

And maybe they really do remember. Because gold isn't made anywhere on Earth. It can't be created inside an ordinary star; it takes something incomparably more violent two dead neutron stars colliding, releasing in a few seconds enough energy to forge the heaviest elements in the universe. We watched it actually happen in twenty seventeen, when astronomers recorded such a collision for the first time and watched gold being born in the dark. When Earth was forming, still molten, gold sank almost entirely into its core. What we mine today arrived later, through asteroids that struck the planet after its crust had already solidified remnants of a stellar catastrophe, scattered near the surface, for human hands to find, billions of years later, with no idea what they were holding.

Maybe that explains the why: not the value, not the money, not even the shine but the fact that we're holding in our hands something born in a violence so vast it exceeds all human understanding. Sutter didn't know this, that morning at the stream. No one who ever went mad for this metal, in any era, knew it. And yet, every time, something inside them recognized the piece of a dead star they held in their hands, and couldn't let it go.
